Our Mission

Under the patronage of G.K. Chesterton and in partnership with families and the Church, the mission of Chesterton Academy of The Divine Family is to foster a Culture of Life by forming a new generation of joyful leaders and saints, educated in the classical tradition and grounded in the truths of the Catholic faith.

Discover Chesterton Academy of The Divine Family, a joyfully Catholic, classical high school dedicated to forming a new generation of joyful leaders and saints. Inspired by Saint Pope John Paul II, our motto, Cultura Vitae—the culture of life—reflects our mission  to prepare students to overcome the materialism and despair of modern culture, embracing the abundant life Christ offers. Our classical curriculum provides a broad liberal arts education, grounded in the cultivation of Christian virtues and a deep appreciation for truth, goodness, and beauty.

The Three Pillars

  • Intellect

We teach the classics of Western thought from physics to philosophy, and the interrelationship of the great ideas; teaching students not merely what to think but how to think.

  • In Virtue

Chesterton Academy helps students grow in virtue by integrating faith into daily learning, fostering a strong moral foundation rooted in Catholic teachings. Through a Christ-centered education, students are encouraged to practice the Cardinal virtues prudence, justice, fortitude as well as humility, patience, kindness, diligence, chastity, gratitude, generosity both in and out of the classroom. Daily prayer, sacraments, and service opportunities reinforce these values, guiding students to develop a compassionate heart, a strong sense of justice, and a commitment to fostering a culture of life. This holistic approach cultivates not just academic excellence but virtue, shaping students to become thoughtful, virtuous leaders in their communities.

  • Spirituality

Our students come to understand and embrace the truth of why they exist: to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world and be happy with Him forever in the next.

Inspired by Saint Pope John Paul II, we take as our motto Cultura Vitae, the culture of life. We make it our mission to prepare our students to triumph over the materialism and despair that pervade our culture and to accept our Lord's offer to have life and have it abundantly. Our classical curriculum combines a broad liberal arts education with a strong emphasis on the cultivation of Christian virtues and an appreciation of beauty.

Our Patrons

G.K. Chesterton

The Chesterton Schools Network is named for the great English writer and Catholic convert, G.K. Chesterton (1874- 1936). Chesterton is our school’s patron because he exemplified the Catholic faith through a life filled with joy, wonder, and gratitude.

Chesterton was considered one of the world’s most outstanding men of letters in the early 20th century. An accomplished essayist, novelist, and poet, he wrote a hundred books on all different subjects. In 1922, he shocked the literary establishment by converting to Catholicism. He was later eulogized by Pope Pius XI as “a gifted defender of the faith,” and there is presently a popular movement to have him canonized. He not only represents the fullness of faith and reason, but also Catholic joy and common sense.

The Divine Family

We chose the Divine Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—as our patron because families today face many challenges. Their unity, love, and faithfulness serve as a guiding model for us. By looking to them, we find inspiration to strengthen family bonds, uphold traditional values, and navigate modern life with faith. Their unwavering commitment makes them the perfect role models as we promote the sanctity and importance of family in society. In times of uncertainty, who better to turn to for guidance and strength than the Divine Family?

The Chesterton Schools Network

We are part of the Chesterton Schools Network based in Minneapolis. An apostolate of the Society of Gilbert Keith Chesterton, the Chesterton Schools Network aims to inspire and encourage parent-led Catholic schools across the nation. The Network offers consulting services, templates for evaluating interest and operating a school, and the Chesterton Academy curriculum framework.

The Story Behind Chesterton Academy of the Divine Family

The Question?

In December 2023, during a silent retreat at Loyola House on the Potomac, my husband Jacob and I took intentional time to seek God’s direction for the next chapter of our lives. In prayer, I found myself reflecting on how God might want to use me going forward. At one point, I asked, “what am I supposed to do with my time now?” That’s when I heard a clear voice say, “You will start a co-ed Catholic boarding high school to teach young men and women the meaning of life.” I wrote it down, unsure of what it meant, but certain it was from Him. The very next day, at dinner, our daughter shared that St. Maria Goretti High School—the only Catholic high school in our county—was closing. The timing was too exact to ignore. I knew then that God had just revealed the next mission—and we began praying for how to respond.

St. Charbel Prayer

The journey unfolded with divine timing. In February 2024, I met Rev. Sister Peace for the first time in the parking lot of the Grotto at Emmittsburg before Mass. She came running up to me and asked if we had ever prayed the novena to St. Charbel—the one she had given to our son a few months earlier. When I told her we hadn’t, she gently but firmly encouraged us to pray it and invited us to return in two weeks to venerate the relic of St. Charbel. We completed the novena and met again as planned. After the veneration, I shared my frustration over the closing of Goretti and the lack of Catholic high school options in our area. She smiled and said, “I’m happy that a Chesterton Academy is opening up in Emmitsburg.” I asked what that was, and she explained that it was part of the Chesterton Schools Network, which helps lay Catholic faithful start classical Catholic high schools. That day, I went home and submitted an inquiry online and began the journey to start a Chesterton Academy.

The Baseball game

On March 8, 2024, I felt a strong prompting from the Holy Spirit to visit St. Maria Goretti High School. What started as a simple act of obedience led to an unexpected request to volunteer (as a nurse) at a school baseball game—an opportunity that allowed me to meet Dr. Amy Summers, the principal at the time. Several months later, in October 2024, Jacob and I sat down with Dr. Summers and Rev. Fr. James Boric, Chaplain of St. Mary’s Catholic School. After the meeting, it became clear that Jacob and I were being led to step forward in faith and open the school without delay.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

In September 2024, our realtor introduced us to a beautiful property on Paradise Church Road, Hagerstown. We began a novena to the Holy Family, and through prayer and discernment, we knew God was calling us to take a leap of faith—we purchase this property for the school. We closed on it in January 2025, and while walking the grounds, we discovered a first-class relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton—a powerful confirmation that we were exactly where God wanted us to be. Just days later, Rev. Fr. James Boric blessed the property, reinforcing our sense of mission. The peace and presence on that land were undeniable.

Expedited Start

That same month, our application to join the Chesterton Schools Network was accepted. We attended Discovery Days in February and formally requested permission to open a year early, in the Fall of 2025. A few days later, the CSN approved our plan for an expedited start. From that moment, we began working full speed—we launched our website, began hiring teachers, and started connecting with interested families. Every step of the way, we have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit, guiding and sustaining us with grace.

Our Current Location

Temporary Location

Now, as we prepare to open Chesterton Academy of the Divine Family this fall, we  are in awe of how far God has brought us. What started as a whisper in prayer has become a mission—one rooted in joy, truth, and the Catholic faith. While the build out at the future location is ongoing, we are opening as a day school, in a temporary location on 19763 Longmeadow Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21742. However, our long-term vision is to become a full boarding catholic high school. The future campus on Paradise church road is rich with spiritual significance: a St. Francis grotto, Our Lady of Grace grotto and first class relics of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton & St. Maria Gorreti. We’re supported by local clergy, faithful families, a community eager to grow in virtue and wisdom and the invaluable resources offered by the Chesterton Schools Network. We truly believe that God is raising up a new generation of joyful leaders and saints, and this school will be one of His instruments. This is just the beginning.

The Divine Family, pray for us!
